Dal Palak Curry is an easy, tasty and nutritious recipe of spinach with pigeon pea lentils. This is a very simple and healthy Dal recipe, which can be made real quick. For vegetarians, dal is one of the best source of protein. And this dal palak recipe is a step further, as we are adding the benefits of spinach to dal. Spinach is extremely rich in antioxidants, iron, calcium and vitamin A, C, E and K. It’s a complete comfort food. Dal palak curry goes well with rice and any dry subji / thoran / poriyal.

This is a very simple dish and can be eaten along with roti or steamed rice. The spice level is mild, so kids can enjoy it too.

Wash the dal two or three times and then pressure cook with a pinch of turmeric till done .

Meanwhile wash and finely chop the vegetables and keep aside.

Next take a kadai and then add two tablespoons of oil. Once heated add the mustard seeds followed by red chilies, cumin seeds and asafetida. Once they are tempered add the chopped onions, ginger, garlic and green chillies.

Saute them very well for 2-3 minutes. Then add the chopped tomato and again saute them well until the tomatoes turn mushy.

At this stage add the spice powders mentioned above and stir well.

Now its time to add the chopped palak. Mix them well for a minute and then close the lid and allow them to cook in low to medium flame for 5 minutes.

When the palak is cooked, add the cooked dal into the kadai. Add enough water and adjust the consistency as per your taste. Let it simmer for few minutes on low medium flame.

Let it simmer for few minutes on low medium flame. At this point check for the salt and add accordingly.

The yummy dal palak is ready to be served. Just before switching off the flame add a tablespoon of pure Ghee.
Conclusion
- Addition of Ghee is purely optional. But it enhances the flavor.
